John Robinson
Dunedin artist John Robinson is a painter, printmaker and jeweller.
Apprenticed to a jeweller at the age of 17, went on to paint for 20 years and then began working with metals again several years ago.
Robinson has a Fine Arts Diploma with Hons from Otago School of Arts
and has been based in Dunedin since 1984.
He is known to many people primarily as an abstract expressionist painter but one who has also engaged in form, figure and landscape.
He deliberately fixes himself very limited parameters, such as using little equipment: within such boundaries, he believes, there is an enormous amount of things he can achieve.
Throughout his practice he has always dellt with portraiture. Although sometimes elusive, the figure has been everpresent, in his lino-cut prints and in his painting.
