Tim Main's Profile

I graduated from the school of Art and Design at C.P.I.T. in 2000 and in 2001 I did a postgrad year.
I then spent almost two years working at the McDougall Art gallery during the
preparations for the new gallery premises. I was involved in the care of the collection and in gilt frame restoration.
Since then I have been working full time as artist/ designer, specialising in screen-printed textiles and sculpture.
The textiles are prints based on New Zealand native plants. They are hand-printed using a screen-printing system, in which the design interlocks with itself when printed consecutively. Prints done in this way should have a good flow designed into them so that the eye can travel continuously through the print without detecting the connections between repeats. Each colour or layer is printed seperately. The concept for the patterns came from some study into Gothic architecture, specifically the profusion of ornamental carving and pattern.
